    Work experience, Tertiary Placements & Employment Scheme

    Victoria Police is committed to offering opportunities for both secondary and tertiary students.

    We have two programs designed to assist students in developing their skills and knowledge in their desired career choice and to ease the transition for students into the workplace.

    • Victoria Police Work Experience Program (VPWEP) - designed for secondary students.
    • Fieldwork Placement Program (FFP) - designed for tertiary students.

    Victoria Police is also involved in the Youth Employment Scheme (YES) along with the Graduate Recruitment Scheme. Further information on these programs can be found below.

    Victoria Police Work Experience Program (secondary students)

    Victoria Police offers placements to students who are enrolled at Victorian Secondary schools.*

    Students must be a minimum of 15 years of age at the time of placement and completing Year 10 or above. Placements are only offered to those students studying Year 10, 11 or 12.

    Placements are available from March until November each year. Placements outside these times will not be arranged.

    Placements take place for one week only (five consecutive business days). Placements cannot be scheduled during a week that contains a public holiday.

    Nominations are to be submitted by careers teachers only. Each school can nominate one student per school year. Schools with multiple campuses across various suburbs may nominate one student per campus.

    Please be advised that a nomination of a student does not automatically guarantee a placement.

    Applications are not to be submitted directly to any police station or Victoria Police department; no placements will be arranged outside of this program.

    Applications will only be considered if all required application forms are completed correctly and signed accordingly.

    Application process:

    If your student is considering a career within Victoria Police and has a genuine interest in our program, please review the information below. All schools that are registered with Victoria Police will receive an email containing the application portal once applications open. This portal will enable careers teachers to submit an application on behalf of their student electronically. Applications will only be accepted if they are submitted via the online portal.

    Key dates:

    • Applications for placements occurring during Terms 1 and 2 of 2019 will open Monday 30 July 2018 and will close Friday 31 August 2018.
    • Applications for placements occurring during Terms 3 and 4 of 2019 will open in February of 2019. More information will be provided in due course.

    Please note that schools may only nominate one student per school year for a placement with Victoria Police. If your student does not obtain a placement for Terms 1 or 2, you may nominate them again for a placement once applications open for Terms 3 and 4.

    Successful students will be required to attend a fingerprinting appointment in due course. Further instructions on this process will be provided to careers teachers directly.

    Fieldwork Placement Program (Tertiary students)

    Through the Fieldwork Placement Program (FPP), Victoria Police endeavours to provide meaningful placements for tertiary students to assist in the field studies component of their qualification.

    All placements are arranged directly between the student, tertiary institution and the relevant Officer in Charge of the proposed work location. If you are interested in completing your placement within Victoria Police you will need to make direct contact with the Officer in Charge at the police station or appropriate contact at your desired department unit.

    Youth Employment Scheme (YES)

    Victoria Police offers a number of placements under the Youth Employment Scheme (YES) Program.

    The YES Program is a component of the State Government's suite of workforce participation programs, which aim to strengthen Victorian industries and communities by increasing workforce participation, particularly by assisting people facing significant barriers to employment.

    Eligibility Criteria – Trainees

    Trainees must:

    • be aged between 15-24 years at the commencement of the trainee-ship;
    • be unemployed or not working more than 15 hours per week;
    • not currently engaged in tertiary education; and
    • have not attained a certificate 4 or above qualification.
