the academy

To graduate as a probationary constable, you must qualify in all aspects of the training and show you have the personal qualities, temperament and attitude to be an effective member of Victoria Police.

The road to your new career

Training at the Victoria Police Academy requires dedication, commitment to succeed. Training is rigorous, disciplined and physically and mentally demanding.

Academy training hours are usually 7.30 am to 4:10 pm Monday to Friday, but these hours may vary to include evening and weekend work.

Over 33-weeks, your days at the Academy will be divided between lectures, physical training and learning the ropes of the operational skills required to carry out your duties. Like any higher education facility, you’ll be able to chart your progress towards your goal through regular practical assessments or exams.

You will be sworn in as a Probationary Constable at the end of week 12, and at week 13, 18 and 26, you will work on-the-job at a police station, giving you the knowledge, skills and confidence to prepare for your career as a police officer. By training both at the Academy and at a police station, you will become a capable, confident and professional member of our team..

And this intensive training is just the beginning of your journey.

Over the next two years you will undergo further training, with scheduled returns to the Academy. When you’ve successfully completed all this, you will graduate with a Diploma of Public Safety with Victoria Police and be confirmed as a Constable.

Costs for recruits who choose to live-in the Academy during training

It is not compulsory to live-in at the Academy during training; however recruits residing within the Academy during their training period will be required to pay a fee including meals and accommodation at $458.22 per fortnight.

Recruits who live-in during training and have a dependant spouse may be eligible for an allowance of $197.97 per fortnight. Under these circumstances the spouse must not be earning more than $484.40 per week. This is assessed once you are accepted for recruit training.
